Being in the land mobile radio business for over 30 years we have seen gray market radios, stolen radios, radios built from the parts of multiple radios into one working radio, radios with out of country (Non-US) firmware, radios with locked codeplugs and no password provided, radios requiring you send them back to the dealer for programming (and a charge) every time you need something changed, and even cheap offshore radios sold online with the same part number but is not an actual genuine OEM Motorola Solutions, Icom, BK Technologies or Tait Communications radio or accessory.
Genuine Land Mobile Radios use a programming software usually referred to as CPS or Customer Programming software. The manufacturers put out new firmware for these radios and repeater equipment several to many times in one year adding new features, bug fixes as well as enhancements. That’s why it is important to have a full-service OEM authorized dealer/partner of the radio equipment you purchase.
